By M. Cleland Powell, III
Inspired by the 2017 theme, "Carnival Fêtes and Feasts," Powell is a New Orleanian who took up painting 10 years ago with no formal training. He has shown in various galleries and was recently features in the WYES documentary film Artists of New Orleans. His works have been featured on Louisiana Cultural Vista Magazine and other publications. Cleland has always felt that painting should awaken something that one would not appreciate by looking at pictures. He believes that art should enables us to get outside of ourselves and see another's view of God's landscape as it appears on canvas.
